This event is organized within the NiCE project "From Niche to Centre - City Centres as Places of Circular Lifestyles", co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Central Europe Programme. This session will explore how circular economy principles can be applied to water resources to support sustainable, safe and regulated reuse of wastewater for urban and agricultural uses.

Water resource management, understood as the exploitation of this precious resource and protection from associated extreme events such as floods and droughts, is one of the major challenges facing cities and regions. This online seminar aims to present how to apply the principles of the circular economy to water resources, specifically for the circular management and valorization of wastewater for urban and agricultural uses, as permitted and promoted by regulations.

Since this valorization is only possible if the quality of available water is strictly monitored, for example to avoid chemical and biological risks, methods and tools for analyzing emerging contaminants and microplastics will also be presented.

Finally, based on the experience of “Acqua in Circolo”, the pilot of the NiCE project organized in Bologna (Italy), the Circular Water Kit will be presented, a manual for cities and citizens who wish to commit to sustainable and circular water use.

The session will be moderated by Zuzana Špuntová from Cyrkl and will include an interactive Q&A session for participants.

Presenters:

1.    Luigi Sciubba, ENEA – Laboratory of Technologies for the Circular Management of Water and Wastewater, holds a PhD in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology and his activity is focussed on agricultural water reuse, phosphorus recovery and emerging contaminant degradation. He has also served as Chemistry teacher in high schools, an experience he recalls with great appreciation.

2.    Roberta Guzzinati, ENEA – Laboratory of Technologies for the Circular Management of Water and Wastewater, holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences and her work focuses on the valorization and circular management of water resources through experimental activities and participation in project design.

3.    Sara Cortesi, ENEA – Laboratory for Sustainability and Circularity Tools, holds a degree in Industrial Design and her research, dissemination, and teaching activity is focussed on Life Cycle Assessment and Product Environmental Footprint, eco-design, and eco-innovation, specifically targeting Small and Medium Enterprises.
