Fuel Cell Applications for Maritime Sector
With increasing global transport demands and more stringent emission regulations, the maritime sector is on the wave of significant technological transformation. In 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted the IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels. Most recently, in April 2025, the 83rd session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) approved draft regulations outlining mid-term measures for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction.
Fuel cells and electrochemical conversion technologies are poised to play a pivotal role in meeting these international GHG reduction targets. From fuel cell-based propulsion systems and onboard energy storage to auxiliary power units (APUs) for vessels and shore-side applications, these technologies offer promising, technically viable solutions for decarbonizing maritime operations.
The IEA Advanced Fuel Cells Technology Collaboration Programme (IEA AFC TCP), in close cooperation with other IEA Technology Collaboration Programmes (TCPs), the IEA itself, and key industry stakeholders, is organizing this dedicated workshop.
The event will gather speakers and participants from across the sector - including shipbuilders and suppliers, cruise line operators, port authorities, classification societies, representatives from IEA and IPHE, fuel cell manufacturers, leading academic and research institutions, and government agencies – to:
- Examine the evolving policy landscape, standards, and international regulations relevant to maritime fuel cell deployment;
- Present case studies and best practices of fuel cell technologies in shipping and port operations;
- Highlight emerging technology trends and demonstration experiences across the maritime sector;
- Discuss and define priorities for the launch of a dedicated AFC TCP Task on fuel cell applications in the maritime sector.
