Co-creating knowledge on coal+ regions in transition

Towards an interdisciplinary understanding of territorial change in the context of the climate transition.

The meeting is organised by the H2020 funded project ENTRANCES - ENergy TRANsitions from Coal and carbon: Effects on Societies. The meeting is hosted by ENEA and co-organised by ENEA, Knowledge and Innovation (K&I) and the University of A Coruña (UDC).

The co-creation meeting will be focused on developing a better understanding of the territorial implication of the clean energy transition for coal and carbon-intensive regions across Europe. Researchers and experts of coal+ regions in transition over Europe and beyond will be invited to attend the meeting. The meeting will be configured as an interdisciplinary dialogue including a plurality of disciplines in Social Science and Humanities (SSH), such as social psychology, sociology, political science, STS, economics, geography, anthropology and others. The co-creation meeting will be informed by the interim results of the ENTRANCES project.

Over the last two years, ENTRANCES has carried out research in 13 coal and carbon-intensive regions aimed at casting a light on the challenges faced and coping strategies adopted by such regions under the double challenges of globalisation and the climate transition. The research has embraced a comprehensive approach encompassing different dimensions – socio-cultural, socio-psychological, socio-political, socio-economic, socio-ecological & technical and gender – to grasp the dynamics of deterritorialisation and reterritorialisation ongoing in all the regions included in the study. The result is a rich set of empirical evidence spanning different dimensions and disciplines that have been organised in 13 comparable case studies across Europe.

The meeting is part of a co-creation itinerary, including a co-creation meeting held in June 2021 with EU policymakers; and a set of 13 regional co-creation meetings to be held in 2023 with local stakeholders.

The meeting is organised in three sessions: an introductory session – dedicated to setting the scene of the co-creation (DAY1); an empirical session – dedicated to presentation and discussion of the ENTRANCES empirical findings and beyond (DAY1 - 16th June h 13.00 – 18.00); and a co-production session – dedicated to knowledge production through dialogue (DAY2 - h 09.00 – 13.00).

Reference person: Nadia Cerone

The meeting will be held on 16th and 17th June in hybrid form: in person in Rome at Villa Lubin (CNEL) and on line.
